These days most people have disconnected from Mother Earth, nature, and from the elements that give us life. Folks have gotten used to the routine of being connected to a machine (computer, tablet, laptop, etc. ) and these machines are a priority for our work, education and even our entertainment. As a consequence, our body's health has become unbalanced, as is our mind and soul. Many are having trouble managing their life and the lives around them.
Because we are earth beings, we need all the elements in our life for optimum functioning, yet unfortunately most people don’t have or make enough time nor space in their lives to achieve this. Yet limitations are in our mind, our Elders in the ancestral traditions have taught us that there is always a way to connect with the Great Spirit, the Sacred and nature. All we must do is set the intention and desire, then the time and place will automatically appear.
The main elements we need include Earth, Water, Fire and Wind and there are other essential elements too, such as plants, minerals, animals. But most important is our connection with other human beings and that which is Sacred, whatever Sacred represents for each of us. Our Ancestors knew this and that is why they lived their lives connected to the All by creating gardens and altars where they prayed not only with words but with action, and that way they could take and thank the essence of life.
Here are some tips on how you can create that Sacred place of connection for your home and family:
1 Find an area where you would like to set your connection and prayer zone. If it is a garden, it already has all the elements. Usually they are present all together in the soil, plants, the water, the heat and bright sun and of course, the wind. When you do gardening, you automatically become connected to the energy of the earth , to the Sacred Spirit of life and you can even grow your own food and medicine. (We will give you some tips for cultivating medicinal plants and their uses in our next blogs). Its best to integrate all family members in the creation of your Sacred space, so organize and set a date where everyone can connect together, create mandalas together with plants and flowers, make small ceremonies to thank Great Spirit, or simply get together to have family time.
2 Orient your indoor altar or connection and praying zone to the east facing the sunrise. Add the element either physical or symbolic and place them on a table or even on the floor. To represent Earth and nature you can use a live plant. For the fire, you can set a small light or if it is possible a candle. For the wind use incense or a conch (which also represents water from the sea). You can also place some water in a clay bowl and put other elements that you consider special and that you feel deserve a place in your alter or
praying zone , such as amulets, minerals, guardians ,etc. When it is ready you can use it for the purpose of connection, prayer and integration.
3 Beyond having your own Sacred space, improving nutrition and eating habits is important, as well as attending ceremonies or outdoor activities. Appreciating the value of the simple things around us brings magic in our life.
